For many, fundraising provides an opportunity to give back to others or to remember a loved one . This year, the Mercy University Hospital Foundation is giving the people of Cork the chance to do both through its unique ‘Wall of Gratitude’.
Situated in the new St Therese’s Oncology Day Unit in the Lee Road Clinic, the Mercy Foundation’s ‘Wall of Gratitude’ has been created to honour and remember all those who have received treatment and care at the Mercy University Hospital. The recently erected mural, funded by the Foundation, is set to be decorated with bespoke ‘Mercy Butterflies’ bearing the name of an individual or family to be remembered.
Designed and handmade by artist Siobhain Steele, these delicate, unique one-off Mercy Butterflies are made with love in Cork, to honour those who have come through our hospital.
Created in porcelain, every Butterfly is impressed with plants from her garden and fired with her unique green glaze. Celebrating life and nature, Siobhain mindfully embosses the names of our loved ones on each Butterfly, creating a personalized piece of art. These elegant butterflies evoke tranquillity, comfort and hope
Each butterfly costs €300 and after a year you will get to keep this beautiful piece of art, unique to you and your loved one.
You can order your butterfly through the Foundation by contacting 021 4274076 or info@mercyhospitalfoundation.ie or by filling in the form below.
One of the first butterflies to be created remembers Mark Prendergast who passed away in 2012 from testicular cancer. The popular ‘Make Your Mark on Cancer’ charity walk was set up in his memory and has since raised close to €350,000 for the Mercy Cancer Appeal.
Mercy University Hospital currently delivers 29% of all new systemic drug therapies for oncology in the Cork/Kerry region and it is expected that demand for cancer services will continue to increase over the coming years. According to Dr. Derek Power, Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Mercy,
Launching the Wall of Gratitude, Deirdre Finn, Head of Fundraising at the Mercy Hospital Foundation said “In trying to come up with a way to thank our donors and supporters and to remember their loved ones we chose butterflies. Our logo since 2009, for us, a butterfly is a sign of hope just like our incredible donors. Their generosity each year helps us to support patients and their families at the Mercy Hospital during some of the most difficult moments in their lives. Even with the difficulty of the last 18 months, our donors have continued to support our various appeals from the Mercy Cancer Appeal to the Kids & Teens Appeal. We look forward to seeing our Wall of Gratitude filled with the names of some of those who have helped us along the way. We hope it will also inspire others and show how much of a difference they can help to make.”
